Shields vs. Health: The Survival Math

In Marathon, your life is protected by two distinct layers: your base biological Health (100 HP) and your technological Shielding. Unlike other shooters where armor applies a flat percentage reduction, Marathon shields act as a buffer that absorbs 100% of incoming damage but takes increased damage from specific weapon archetypes.

Light Shields vs. Heavy Shields

  • Light Shield (50 HP): Found in common crates. Provides just enough buffer to survive an extra burst from a Volley Rifle. Essential for "Naked" runs.
  • Heavy Shield (100 HP): High-tier loot. Effectively doubles your health. However, Heavy Shields slow your base movement speed by 5%, making you a larger, slower target for railgun users.

The Kinetic vs. Energy Trade-off

Our data shows that Energy weapons (like the V99 Channel Rifle) deal 20% bonus damage to Shields but 10% reduced damage to base Health. Conversely, Kinetic weapons (like the M77 AR) shred Health but are partially reflected by high-tier shielding. Mixing your loadout—one Energy for the break, one Kinetic for the finish—is the pro-tip for Season 1.

Check the Meta Rankings to see which weapons offer the best "Shield-to-Kill" consistency.
